Along with the Smurfs and Crayola Create and Play, I've been doing all of my character voice work lately with the Lauten LS-208, but I thought today let's do a cartoon voice shootout between the 208 and the undeniable king of VO, the Neumann U87ai to compare them head to head. Let me kinow what you think.

    Hey man. Good one for posting this debate… It’s a good one. Mic that I believe achieves both characteristics is in fact the Sennheiser MKH 50. It’s super warm, but very detailed and precise, with truly excellent voice isolation. And takes EQ really well. Highly highly recommended to give it a try.

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff for sure. I keep trying LDCs against my MKH50 and it always wins. And if you eq the mids up a little, it sounds quite Neumann-y, in the best way, but without any room pick up. See if you can get hold of one to try/review. I’ll lend you mine if you’re in LA. Lemme know

    I feel like SDCs are really underutilized for voice/vocal in the studio. The Schoeps CMC641 (super cardioid) is the industry standard indoor boom mic, does it also see use for VO like the MKH 416? There's a Gearspace thread about recording vocals with the CMC64 (cardioid) and CMC621 (wide cardioid) so it obviously works well for some people

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff День назад

      It's probably because it's about 60 percent more expensive than a 416, or that it isn't the same known entity as a 416 in the world of VO, but the Schoeps does not get talked about much in the world of VO, despite being a location recordist's prime choice. The truth is that those two worlds don't really overlap as much as one would think, but the Schoeps has a tremendous reputation. I love the sound of SDC's for VO. You can get some really great vocal sounds from an SDC, but for close up work like that, you really have to have your mic technique on point.

    • @Hectagonist
      @Hectagonist День назад

      The Schoeps are very natural and musical so I guess you lose the mid forward bite that makes the 416 so appealing for VO. But they’re also less sensitive than the 416 so they might be more forgiving of bad technique? I might have to setup my CMC64 and compare it to an 87 or something

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff 2 дня назад

      Good question! For something like this, I’ll just do each character’s lines separately to keep better consistency. If it’s just 2 characters and they’re interacting with each other, I may try to do them live to have better energy, but for the Smurfs here, they were all individual lines so I could just pop off a few takes of each line and then move down the script.
